It’s Bedtime

What you do before bed could make you more successful

I really like to get the most out of my day, try to squeeze in everything I can, wrap up all loose ends, and then tip off the night with some down time; this is definitely harder than it sounds. So, I am constantly attracted to those “Things Successful People Do Before Bed”, type-of articles, and I have found few things helpful, that may be worth including in your bedtime routine.

Firstly (and I say this to myself also), don’t beat yourself up, life can be busy, things pop up, and sometimes it is just impossible to get everything checked off of your never-ending to-do list. Just breathe, and take everything one step at a time.

5 Things to do before bed, to set yourself for a more productive day and a successful outlook on life:

1.  Make a “Thankful List”

Before you go to bed, think of all the things that happened that day, and say thank you for every little moment and happy break. Focus on the “wins” of the day to stay positive and energetic for the upcoming day. I don’t think it is bad to go over the points of the day that weren’t your best, but instead of thinking of them as losses, think of them as learning experiences, and learn from every negative (then they turn into “wins”).  Think of ways in the future you could avoid or approach the “loss” in a better way or a more successful way. Then let it go. Exhale.

Then while in bed, before you close your tired eyes, say aloud the things you are thankful for; anything from simple to ridiculous. You are lightening your heart in doing this, focusing on the things that are most important, realizing what is of value, and waking up feeling great about yourself, your life, your work, and the new day.

2. Read

I tend to read articles during this time, or catching up on current affairs, but I believe the intention is to relax, unwind, and let your mind take off on a journey in a story… so maybe, choose some really awesome fiction. Or… do as I do, and choose a Ted Talk, Entrepreneurship article, Forbes, CNN or CBC.

An article from Business Insider, says whatever you read, it helps you to generate creativity and passion:

“This isn’t necessarily reserved just for business reading or inspirational reading. Many successful people find value in being browsers of information from a variety of sources, believing it helps fuel greater creativity and passion in their lives.”

3. Make a To-Do List

“Clearing the mind for a good night sleep is critical for a lot of successful people.” -Business Insider

To Do lists rock my world. Literally set me up so I know exactly what needs to get wrapped up from the day before, and tackled the following day- in sequential order, so there are no surprises (there always is…).

4. Spend some time with family and loved ones

I cannot operate without a little cuddle time and conversation. Soak in these elements of your life and really enjoy them, because they are truly the most important part of your day. Also, sharing your day through conversation with your partner helps you talk aloud about how you are feeling, makes the other person feel more connected and part of our life, and allows for some really great insight from those who care most about you.

5. Picture Success

Whether you took my advice and made an image board, or you love your Pinterest boards… visualize tomorrows’ success before bed. Visualize next weeks’ success. Then visualize your life: the things you want, work for, love, and wish to have succeeded in or achieved.

“Many successful people take a few minutes before bed to envision a positive outcome unfolding for the projects they’re working on, says Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert”
Good night all, and I’d love to hear what you do before bed to add to my list! Add in the comments or tweet with me at @laurenmarias.
